Day 1: Arrival Day
Upon arrival at Kilimanjaro International Airport, you will be warmly welcomed by our private driver and transferred to a clean, quiet 3-star or higher resort/hotel as B&B in Moshi town.
Breakfast is included.
Your head guide will meet you at your resort/hotel approximately 30 minutes after check-in for a full briefing, gear check, and to arrange rental of any equipment you may need.
Program: Machame Route – 7 Days
Day 1: Machame Gate – Machame Camp
10.75 km / 7 mi | 5–6 hours | Rainforest
• Elevation: 1,811 m / 5,942 ft → 3,021 m / 9,911 ft
• Altitude gained: 1,210 m
After a 45-minute drive from Moshi, we pass through Machame Village to the Kilimanjaro National Park Gate. While permits are processed, you can observe the lively activity as many teams prepare for their climb.
The trek begins through beautiful rainforest scenery with winding trails. Your guide will introduce you to the local flora, fauna, and wildlife. At this lower elevation, trails can be muddy and slippery; gaiters and trekking poles are highly recommended.
Day 2: Machame Camp – Shira Camp
5.3 km / 3 mi | 4–5 hours | Moorland
• Elevation: 3,021 m / 9,911 ft → 3,839 m / 12,595 ft
• Altitude gained: 818 m
After a good night’s sleep and a hearty breakfast, we leave the rainforest and follow an ascending trail across a valley and up a steep rocky ridge. The route turns west into a river gorge before reaching Shira Camp, where temperatures begin to drop.
Day 3: Shira Camp – Lava Tower – Barranco Camp
10.75 km / 6 mi | 5–6 hours | Semi-Desert
• Elevation: 3,839 m / 12,595 ft → 3,986 m / 13,077 ft
• Altitude gained: 147 m
This is a crucial acclimatization day, even though you end at a similar elevation to where you started. From the Shira Plateau, we hike east along a ridge, passing the junction toward Kibo Peak, then turn southeast to Lava Tower (4,650 m / 15,250 ft), also known as the Shark’s Tooth.
After Lava Tower, we descend to Barranco Camp, which helps your body adapt to the altitude.
Day 4: Barranco Camp – Karanga Camp – Barafu Camp
8.5 km / 5 mi | 6–8 hours | Alpine Desert
• Elevation: 3,986 m / 13,077 ft → 4,034 m / 13,235 ft → 4,662 m / 15,295 ft
• Altitude gained: 676 m
After breakfast, we climb the famous Barranco Wall, a steep but exciting scramble offering spectacular views. We continue through Karanga Valley to the junction connecting with the Mweka Trail.
The trek continues to Barafu Camp, completing the Southern Circuit and offering stunning summit views from multiple angles. An early dinner and rest prepare you for summit night.
Overnight at Barafu Camp.
Day 5 & Day 6: Barafu Camp – Summit – Mweka Camp
Ascent: 4.86 km / 3 mi | 5–7 hours
Descent: 13 km / 8 mi | 5–6 hours
Terrain: Glaciers, snow-capped summit
(Includes an additional night for better altitude acclimatization and higher summit success)
• Elevation: 4,662 m / 15,295 ft → 5,895 m / 19,341 ft
• Altitude gained: 1,233 m
• Descent to: 3,106 m / 10,190 ft
• Altitude lost: 2,789 m
You will wake between midnight and 2:00 a.m. for the final ascent—both the most challenging and rewarding part of the climb.
We ascend between the Rebmann and Ratzel Glaciers, moving steadily through switchbacks toward Stella Point. Here, you will enjoy a breathtaking sunrise. Faster climbers may reach the summit in time to see sunrise from the top.
A final one-hour ascent brings you to Uhuru Peak, often through snow.
Congratulations! People—one step at a time—you have reached Uhuru Peak (5,895 m), the highest point in Africa.
After photos and celebration, we descend to Mweka Camp, stopping at Barafu for lunch and a short rest. Gaiters and trekking poles are strongly recommended due to loose gravel and volcanic ash.
Overnight at Mweka Camp.
Day 7: Mweka Camp – Mweka Gate – Moshi
9.1 km / 6 mi | 3–4 hours | Rainforest
• Elevation: 3,106 m / 10,190 ft → 1,633 m / 5,358 ft
• Altitude lost: 1,473 m
After breakfast, enjoy a heartfelt farewell ceremony with your mountain crew. We descend through the rainforest to Mweka Gate, where you receive your summit certificates.
A vehicle will meet you at Mweka Village for transfer back to your resort/hotel in Moshi (approx. 40 minutes). Along the way, we may stop at the Mt. Kibo souvenir shop and enjoy a complimentary lunch.
Day 9: Departure Day
Our driver will transfer you from your resort/hotel to Kilimanjaro International Airport 3 hours before your scheduled departure.
